Other Things to See and Do

Barkerville provides plenty to see and do to keep visitors occupied, but we are not the only attraction in the area. Whether you are looking for more historic or educational opportunities, accommodations and supplies, artistic and cultural activities, or outdoor adventures, there is plenty to do. Cottonwood House

Cottonwood House Historic Site is located 26 kilometres east of Quesnel, BC, on the way to Barkerville. It is a preserved roadhouse on the Gold Rush Trail. Visit their website for more information.

Wells, BC

Just minutes from Barkerville, this cozy mining town is as friendly now as it was in its heyday in the 1930s. Browse through historic ‘uptown’ Wells, once a company townsite for the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mine with its many unique heritage buildings. Wells has a number of public and private art galleries, excellent restaurants, and comfortable accommodation. Visit the town's website for more information.

Bowron Lakes Provincial Park

This beautiful Provincial Park, a short drive from Barkerville, provides one of the world’s best canoeing opportunities. 116 kilometers of lakes, rivers and short portages form a rectangular chain through superb mountain scenery, allowing you to canoe right back to your starting point.

Bowron Lake Provincial Park provides some of British Columbia’s finest wildlife viewing opportunities. Bald eagles, osprey, moose, mink, beaver, bears and a wide variety of bird life are regularly seen from your canoe.

Outdoor Adventures 

Barkerville and the surrounding area provides endless opportunities for outdoor adventure.

The Friends of Barkerville website contains a section about hiking in the area that may prove helpful.

Several up-to-date maps are also available of the Mount Agnes & Groundhog Lake Trails near Barkerville, as well as the Cornish Mountain & Meadow Trails, closer to Wells. Both maps are in .pdf format.

Island Mountain Arts

Founded in 1977, Island Mountain Arts is a non-profit arts organization based in picturesque Wells, BC. Beginning with the renowned Summer School of the Arts, this vibrant arts organization now boasts a Public Art Gallery and Gift Shop, an International Celtic Harp School and the award winning ArtsWells Festival of All Things Art.


 

Sunset Theatre

Built in 1934 as a movie theatre and community space, the newly restored Sunset Theatre in Wells, BC is home to some of the regions finest music, theatre, and other performance art, showcasing both local and traveling talent. The theatre also provides play development services, and serves as a centre for artist retreats.

Private Art Galleries

The nearby town of Wells has a number of private art galleries that sell local, original artworks and crafts. Everyone can find something that suits their taste, and sometimes even meet the artist while they browse. For more information, visit the Art Galleries in Wells website.
