Barkerville's Travelling Edukit

Barkerville has six complete 'Edukit' packages that are offered as a resource for fifth grade teachers in British Columbia through their School District Resource Centre.

The Barkerville Historic Town Edukit is intended to give fifth grade students a picture of life in British Columbia during the gold rushes of the 1860s and 1870s.

The kit will arrive in a replica of an old-fashioned trunk, and is designed to stimulate students' imaginations by using a host of artifacts that are real or exact replica.

These artifacts can be handled and used by students, making the learning process hands-on.  

Each kit contains (among other things):

• A button boot that can be done up with a button hook.
• A gold pan and hand-forged crevicing spoon, used to clean up real gold from a small working replica of a rocker box. The gold may then be kept by the class as a memento of Barkerville.
• Other artifacts include a 'Sticking Tom' candle holder, a slate, a gold blower, and (in some kits) a skate.
  
• Additionally, artifacts, photographs, posters, a slide show, two videos, and written material on the gold rush are included.
